Structures & Accessories
The structures offered by Hobo Rails are 1:20.3 Scale and are patterned after buildings that might have been found in sawmill, mining towns, and in fact just about any rural setting along the narrow and standard gauge railways of early twentieth century America.
Western Red Cedar is used exclusively, throughout the construction to help insure that the structures are strong, durable, and  resistant to the elements.
The structures are assembled beginning with a framework consisting of 3/8" square supports for the walls and roof, mounted on a 3/8" x 7/8" foundation. This results in a very strong and durable building that will hold up well in  the garden railroad environment.
Scale size Rough-cut Western Red Cedar boards are placed over the framework and roof rafters and the roofing is installed. Depending on the type of building being represented, the roof may be covered with individual Cedar shingles, Hobo Rails tar-paper,  corrugated metal or board and batten.
Interior is accessible for cleaning, maintenance, or installation of lights, by removable ( brass screws) Oak plywood bottom panel.
The interior and exterior of the completed structure is protected from the elements by an application of BehrŽ brand weatherproofing, wood sealer and finish. This product offers excellent water, ultraviolet, and mildew protection. For constant exposure to extreme weather, annual inspection of the structure and if necessary, re-application of the weather protector to the exterior, is recommended.
Windows are constructed using real glass set into a solid Cedar framework. The assembled winder is treated with wood preserver before it is installed into the structure.
Smaller structures like "Grampa's Outhouse and the passenger shelters are built using scale size 2" x 4"s foe the framework.
Hobo Rails products are not intended for use by children. These are adult products intended for display purposes only, on garden railroads or dioramas.

All efforts have been made during the construction of these products using the best available weather proof glues and finishes to help insure that they are as resistant to the elements as possible. All wood structures exposed to the elements will require periodic inspection to maintain the integrity of the weather protective finish..
Some of the larger structures are offered with a 1920s or 1930s automobile included. The cars are made up from 1:20th scale metal kits and are custom built to represent varying degrees of age and use to better blend into the over-all scene. The major components of the cars are metal with plastic and vinyl detail parts. Because of their scale size they blend in very well with the structures and add a nice bit of detail and "attitude" to a garden railroad scene.
